Art is better shared. Folkmade is a student-run initiative dedicated to crafting the story
of student artisanship on College Hill. We celebrate the homegrown makers of the Brown, RISD, and Providence communities.
Our mission is threefold:
Folkmade brings the maker back to the product, and we do this through beautiful photo-essay style storytelling. Our writers and photographers meet extensively with each artist. We stay in the studio with them until 2am. We watch them delicately sew pages together, and mix their watercolors to the perfect shade.
We talk to them, and we bring that conversation to you.
Folkmade gives art a loving home. We acknowledge the talent in our community by providing student artists with a means of selling their craft, and we give the College Hill community a platform to support young makers.
Our products are made by your next door neighbor, by the girl who served you a coffee this morning, by the student in your class who hardly speaks, but goes home to carve wooden tables. Folkmade hosts events to elevate the arts on campus, and creates a rapport between art and the public. We love our team, our team loves our artists, and we love that we can to bring this to you.
We know you're asking: where does my money go? The aim of Folkmade is to promote artists and provide them with a support system. As such, we want the maximum amount possible of each sale to go straight to the student artist. For each item sold, 75-85% of the revenue goes directly to the artist. Folkmade uses the 15-25% commission to pay for things like packaging, e-commerce, and website upkeep. This means that every time you buy art from Folkmade, you are helping to sustain both the website and the artist.
